The newspapers on display were originally published in Manistee in October 1871. Both issues of the Manistee Times, the large one dated October 11, 1871 and the small one dated October 14, 1871, are significant because they are the first newspapers that were published directly after the Great Fire of 1871 which destroyed roughly two-thirds of the city.
